Yet oddly, instead of offering help, the two ran off as if terrified. He was sick for days-and often delirious-waking up to find two strangers peering in at him from the cabin door. But one day while hiking, Ish was bitten by a rattlesnake, and the solitude he had so desired took on dire new significance. The cabin had always been a special retreat for Isherwood Williams, a haven from the demands of society. It remains a fresh, provocative story of apocalyptic pandemic, societal collapse, and rebirth. First published in 1949, award-winning Earth Abides is one of the most influential science-fiction novels of the twentieth century. ![]()

Publishing a print magazine is no easy task and, as we rely more on digital media, the number of people who are willing to take on the financial risk of producing an independent magazine are getting fewer and fewer. ![]() ![]() It can’t decide if it wants to be exhaustively comprehensive with its facts or if it wants to take a closer look at Mandela’s actual psychology and personality. There are several admirable qualities to Chadwick’s work and the always exceptional Idris Elba gives an outstanding leading performance, but this film also suffers from an identity crisis. ![]() Granted it was made well before Mandela passed away, and while not necessarily a bad film or one that does a disservice to the man’s legacy, it’s just a rather inert bit of filmmaking. ![]() It’s a shame that in the year of Nelson Mandela’s death the best tribute anyone has been able to come up with outside of some really thoughtfully written pieces by those who knew the South African civil rights leader best is Justin Chadwick’s biopic, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. ![]() ![]() Unlike IQ, which is basically inborn or crystallized, Emotional Intelligence is malleable - you can improve it. ![]() You can learn to improve your Emotional Intelligence When you are able to recognize the emotions of others, you are more equipped to adapt how you communicate and garner better relationships and outcomes. ![]() Second, it involves recognizing emotions in others and the empathy you are able to experience as a result. As much as I love his 100 issue marathon run on Fantastic Four, his truly epic Thor issues, wall to wall action in Avengers, all Marvel Comics he brought to life, and characters he created, it was his ’70s leap to DC Comics that brought his truest vision to paper. He was often and easily taken for granted, and stretched thin to the point that the work he’s most recognized for, unfortunately, isn’t really his best work. ![]() During the celebrated Marvel Age of the 1960′s, Kirby, a workhorse of uncanny proportions, produced more books a month than most creators do in a year today. It’s hard to fathom what Marvel Comics at their inception and heyday might’ve been like without Jack drawing most of the books, stretching imagination to its limits, all while establishing a house style. ![]() To put it simply, it’s impossible to imagine comic books existing in their modern form without Jack Kirby. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We discussed the book’s origins - it began as a pitch for a TV series - and the idea of Lovecraft Country as a secret history of science fiction’s racist roots. On Tuesday of this week, I interviewed Ruff as part of his book release party at Elliott Bay Book Company. ![]() The resulting narrative is fascinating, illuminating, and surprisingly fun. By centering the book on the family of an African-American man named Atticus Turner, Ruff is handing Lovecraft’s legacy off to a new protagonist, one who Lovecraft, by all accounts, would have loathed. Lovecraft Country holds Lovecraft accountable for his beliefs. The pivot-point for the novel is arguably the most famous racist in American literary history: HP Lovecraft, the cult horror writer who was an unabashed white supremacist. While the former is well-documented, sci-fi’s racist past is much less overt. ![]() Specifically, it’s a story that juxtaposes America’s shameful history of systemic racism with the racist history of American science fiction. Seattle author Matt Ruff’s new novel Lovecraft Country is a thoughtful, rewarding examination of the connection between genre and American racism. ![]() ![]() ![]() *Review Contributed by Karen Yingling, Staff Reviewer* Includes a glossary and additional material at the end of the book about Mongolia, its people, and their commitment to protect snow leopards. In Alabama alone, twenty black men were known to have been murdered, and countless others, women included, were beaten, disabled, jailed, “disappeared,” or had their lives otherwise ruined between March 1931 and September 1935. After the Scottsboro story broke on March 25, 1931, it was open season for old-fashioned lynchings, legal (courtroom) lynchings, and mob murder. Written from the perspective of the district 17 (CPUSA) Reds who worked primarily in Alabama, it acquaints a new generation with the impact of the Great Depression on postwar black and white, young and old, urban and rural Americans.
